Late Start Reminder

Clever R-V Schools
Home of the Bluejays

December 8, 2015

Parents:

Winter is quickly approaching and with it comes inclement weather.  In the past few years, we have experienced all types of weather which has forced our school and others to cancel classes.  In some instances however, Clever Schools has utilized a two-hour late start when feasible.

If a late start is used this year, buses will once again run two hours later than normal and our EleMiddle building will not be open until 9:30 am.  This will allow all of us, including faculty and staff, the extra time we need to arrive at school safely.  It will also give our maintenance crew the time and space they need to better prepare the parking lots, sidewalks, and buildings on these wintery days.

Classes on the EleMiddle campus will begin at 10:00 am when the two-hour late start option is used.

Thank you for your continued support of Clever Schools and our great students.

Mr. Benjy Fenske

Clever's Annual Performance Report

2015 Annual Performance Report
Each year, public schools in Missouri are scored on an Annual Performance Report (APR) that is generated by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).  This annual report is an accountability measure to review the performance of districts across the state. The accountability process is lined out in the Missouri School Improvement Program, otherwise known as MSIP 5. Accountability measures include the following:  Student Achievement (MAP/EOC scores), College and Career Readiness, Graduation Rate and Attendance Rate. Clever_High_SchoolLogo634036696339515680.jpg

We are excited to announce that Clever School District received 95.7% of total points possible. Thanks to the hard work of teachers, students, parents, administration, and the greater school community, the Clever School DIstrict was able to find this great gain on the APR.  Work was  focused on comprehensive literacy, learning targets, and instructional technology, which helped achieve great gains in student achievement.  The Springfield News Leader commented on the improvements made by the district in their article, Christian County School Districts Make Gains, Meet Benchmarks. Congratulations students and staff of the Clever R-V School District for a great 2015 report card!

As we focus on continuous improvement, there will be continued work not only on literacy and numeracy, but also designing and implementing instruction that will support and  develop the whole child. There is still work to be accomplished, and our target areas have not changed. The district focus areas include:  Comprehensive Literacy, building capacity and show growth in Mathematics; College and Career Readiness Skills. Instruction throughout the district will continue to improve and evolve as we continue on this journey toward educational excellence. We want to prepare our learners to go out into the workforce with the 21st Century skills necessary to succeed: Collaboration, Critical Thinking, Communication and Creativity.

Comprehensive literacy is the core of all educational success.  The work that has been done has prepared students for the information-rich environment within which they live, and will be the foundational piece that will support the 21st century skills and instruction. Continued focus on comprehensive literacy will keep a balanced instructional approach, and lead to continued student achievement gains. The next step will be to use these literacy skills to support and expand a focus on STEM education and build learning stamina through rigor and relevance in all disciplines. High expectations in all areas, will help support the work and achievement gains on our APR.  Again, congratulations to all Clever R-V staff and students on the great gains. We look forward to another year of improved student achievement and a great APR in 2016!

Steve Carvajal, Superintendent

Robyn Gordon, Assistant Superintendent

Attendance Reminder

Just a quick reminder about our attendance expectation. We are striving for a 94% attendance rate. If our students aren't here, they are falling behind.

We have set an expectation that students should meet the 94% threshold in order to participate in clubs, field trips, dances, etc.  Participation in these types of events is a privilege, and this is earned, in part, by showcasing good behavior and maintaining excellent attendance.  If participation is jeopardized due to attendance issues, a student and his or her parents may appeal the decision by using an Attendance Waiver Request that will be reviewed by the Attendance Committee.  These waivers can be obtained through the K-4 or 5-8 office.

Family History

To continue on with our geography unit, we passed out a family tree assignment for students to work on this weekend. I decided to jump in on the fun and have been working on it for the past few hours. I hope the kids find this as much fun as I do...or maybe I'm just a little nerdy! Anyways, I wanted to share a little with you all in hopes that this will drive the students to dig deeper!

*My grandfather was a Moore. I'm curious to see if I have any relation with Ambryah!
*I just discovered the last name of Cowan on my maternal grandfather's side. Nate?? My grandfather's mother's name was Annie Cowan (1871-1920).
*My 4Great Grandmother's 2nd cousin was Mark Twain!!!
*I have been able to trace my family back about a dozen generations to Quebec, Canada, Northern Ireland, France, Germany & Scotland.

Happy searching!

Weekly Update

I know you will be receiving the Friday Newsletter tomorrow but I wanted to add a few things as well as remind you of a few others.

1. The friction assignment was a BIG hit! We had stories, songs, slide shows, a game, and much more! I love when students can use their creative minds to aid in the process of learning. I hope to have some pictures & videos uploaded to the blog sometime this weekend.

2. Next Tuesday we will have Fire Prevention Week. The whole morning will consist of Reading, Social Studies & our Fire Safety Presentation. The afternoon will consist of math, band & counseling. When our schedule changes, we go with the flow. I'm sure the kids will do just fine with this.

3. Next Wednesday during science we will be having our weekly DARE class. The kids are loving this & I'm very excited that Christian County offers this for us.

4. Don't forget we are collecting box tops & Sunny D labels. Check out this link to see the list of eligible product labels. Once we reach 20 labels, we get 20 free books. 40 labels = 40 FREE books!

Friction Activity

Today we discussed Friction in Science. Students have an assignment to go along with this however they do have a choice in what they do. Here are the instructions that I gave them:

  1. Create a song that explains and gives examples of the 4 types of friction.
    1. Lyrics must be written out.
    2. Song must be performed for the class or recorded for the class to view.
  2. Write a poem explaining the 4 types of friction.
    1. The poem must include all 4 types with examples for each.
    2. The poem must be ½ - 1 page in length.
    3. This is an activity for someone who wants to work on their own.
  3. Write a short story, 1-2 pages, about someone encountering the 4 different types of friction.
  4. DIY: With teacher approval, you may have another GREAT idea!

Groups of 3 or more must be approved by Mrs. Fenley.
This is to be a small project. Nothing needs to be purchased or made with supplies that must be purchased. I'm encouraging students to think outside of the box and get creative with what they already have.

Geography

Due to our time constraints during our reading & social studies block, we began our geography project today. Monday will be a day of social studies with the rest of the week for reading (social studies embedded where possible). There are a number of different geography concepts that your child can be working on; including states & capitals, location of states, reading maps, etc. This is NOT homework however if they are in need of something to do at home, this would be a great option!

There is a States & Capitals song that we are listening to almost every morning to start our day. This can be found at this link:
Video

Everyone has the lyrics to go along with it.

Books & Breakfast

Next Thursday, September 24, is our first of four ‘Books and Breakfasts’ this school year.   It is open to student in grades 4 – 6 AND any parents or teachers that have read the book:   Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library.

We will begin at 7:30 with a cinnamon roll and be placed into discussion groups around the library.   We should be done by 7:50 or 7:55 at the latest.

I do need a head count of those here at school who are planning to attend.    If you didn’t read this book, you may want to read the next one for our 2nd B&B on November 24th :  Counting by 7’s

Opaa! began a company-wide participation contest in October.  The goal is to feed healthy meals to more students in every district.  We are measuring percentage of increase in meals based on the first month of school and comparing it with the rest of the year.

TO WIN:
The contest winner from each Region will receive $1500 in equipment, supplies, etc.  The company wide winner will receive an additional $3500 in equipment and supplies.  That’s potentially $5000 of equipment that we don’t have to ask Dr. Henson for, which will potentially free up more money for your budget requests! J

HOW YOU CAN HELP:
We are currently running neck and neck with Ash Grove for our Region!  Please encourage your students to try breakfast and lunch with us, have breakfast and lunch with us yourself, encourage the parents of your students to come have lunch with their students.  Every meal or a la carte purchase helps!!!
