Science Project

Happy Thursday! I wanted to make sure that everyone was clear on the expectations for the science project.

1. This should be something SIMPLE. There is no need to go buy anything. They could test the best type of paper to make a paper airplane fly farther or what kind of bubble gum blows the biggest bubble? This is simply to see if they understand the process of the scientific method & can follow the steps.

2. All students were given a guide to go by and a lab report to fill out as they go. This guide has deadlines for each section & should be initialed each day by the teacher to make sure they are staying on track. (I was gone yesterday so some of them may not have my initials).

3. This is a type of assessment and should be solely completed by the students. They are welcome to get some help coming up with an idea but the writing of the lab report, designing of testable question & hypothesis, etc should be all their work.

4. They will be giving short presentations next Wednesday or Thursday to share what they tested & what happened during the test. I'm not looking for a 10 minute PowerPoint presentation, just a quick 1-2 minute explanation of what they did & learned.

You may use this link to see a copy of their timeline & expectations if they don't have it at home.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

We began our DARE program today. Officer Whittaker came today to talk to us about DARE and what we would be doing this semester. It will be every Wednesday morning at 8:15.

Your child should be bringing home some information about our DARE program with a place for you to sign that it is okay for him/her to participate. We would like this turned back in before our next DARE class, next Wednesday.

Upcoming Quizzes & Tests

I apologize for not posting this sooner. I am very good at blaming the 'baby brain' for my forgetfulness.

*We have been working on our continents and oceans as our morning work for the past two weeks. We will have a quiz over them on Friday morning. All students have a map that we have been using to label & study.

*Our first math topic of place value is almost over. Students will be allowed to take the test tomorrow if they feel ready but will have until next Tuesday if they would like more time. We will be spending the rest of this week and Monday on anything they are still confused on. I do have a study guide created that is not mandatory but will be available to them if they would like. It is rather long but I have given examples & been as descriptive as possible with my instructions. They may do all, part or none of it. It is really for them to practice the specific parts they are struggling with.

*We have also been working on a list of vocabulary words. Students will have a vocabulary quiz on Tuesday morning. I'm not checking for spelling with these words; just an understanding of their meanings. Their words are:

This is the Rental Information that will be sent home with your child on Thursday from Ms. Adams. I just wanted to give everyone a heads up.

5th Grade Band
Instrument Rental Information

5th Grade Band Parents!

First of all, I am so glad you have chosen to embark on this journey with me! Beginning band is a very exciting time and I am really looking forward to getting to know your kids and getting to teach them music. Below is everything you need to know about picking instruments.

  1. What you need to do right nothing! I do things a little bit differently than other band directors. Before starting on band instruments, all students will learn music fundamentals on recorder. We will also be learning some music theory, doing ear training, and reading lots of notes and rhythms.
  2. In mid-September, a team from Springfield Music will come during 5th grade band time to help me get every student tested on every instrument. With the testing information and what I have observed from every student on the recorder and with our class activities, we will start narrowing down what each student will play. *Please note that a very limited number of saxophonists and percussionists will be taken.* I work very hard to get all students on an instrument that they are interested in and will be successful at playing. If you do have a concern, please let me know.
  3. Finally, Instrument Rental Night with Springfield Music will be Tuesday, October 4, at 6:30 p.m. in the MS Band Room. All families will need to come that night, even if it is only to purchase the band book. I am choosing to do the rental night with Springfield Music, but if you would rather rent from Palen Music or Hoover Music, you may do so. *Please also remember that there are very few school instruments available and many of them are not in ideal playing condition. Unless there is no way for your family to afford $20-25/month for a quality instrument, please plan on renting or buying the instrument that we settle on for your child.*

Thanks again for supporting and being a part of music education! I know that your child will learn a lot and have a lot of fun. There’s nothing quite like the experience of learning to play an instrument!

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. The best way to get ahold of me is via email.

5th Grade Band

All 5th grade students had the opportunity to be introduced to band today & were able to meet Ms. Adams, Clever's new band director. They were given the band syllabus & permission form. If students are interested or even not sure about it, they will be going back to talk more with Ms. Adams this week. Those permission slips are due next Monday, August 22nd.

If your child has talked to you about band and has made the decision not to participate, he/she will not need to go back to band again this week.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me or Ms. Adams.

Thursday, April 14th at the Clever High School

One week from today (Pray for sunshineJ) is the Strike Out Childhood Cancer night at the ballfieldsJ

We have many fun and exciting things going  on that night. From a dizzy bat competition (which I’m very excited about), a sparkle contest, vendors (who are selling things from homemade signs, and kettle corn; to seeing how fast you can throw a strike using a radar gun) the ball games, and finally a candle light vigil in honor or memory of kids who have fought this battle.

If you bring a new toy, still in its packaging, you can get in for FREE!

If you have family and friends in the area that you could pass this information to, that would be wonderful! I’ve attached a list of toy suggestions if anyone has questions.

Thanks for supporting our endeavor to Strike Out Childhood Cancer!!
